    Save Jericho

Okay, anybody who's talked to me in the last year knows how into Jericho I am. It's classic sci-fi with a great dose of human pyschology - it's like Survivor but much better. And CBS announced today they were cancelling it.

The show is great - suspense, mystery, survival instincts and all that television crap. But it had good writing too with good actors. It was the second most popular new show when it debuted, right behind Heroes and we all know how heros is doing. But the show's producers/ advertisers/ bosses took a long hiatus at a bad time. And the viewers didn't follow it. But did they?? I know plenty of people who tape/ PVR it but don't watch it in the time slot - and those numbers aren't counted as "viewers".

I watched this show like I watched Star Trek and X-Files. Anyone remember how popular Star Trek was when it debuted?? It was cancelled after just a few seasons. And now look at it.

I want my Jericho back - at a minimum for a conclusion. The show ended with the next town (New Bern) attacking them, Jericho pulling the tank out of the barn (literally) and one of the main characters dying on the kitchen table. We need a conclusion.

Help save jericho. Sign the petition, evn if just to hear me stop whining!

    It's Johnny Cash's fault

You know, it's Johnny Cash's fault I can't find a house to buy.  Rap music is also to blame but it's mostly Johnny's fault.  Let me explain....

It's now 1:12am.  I'm thinking it's time to head to bed.  I got woken up this morning to the bass shaking my walls to what I think was rap music - it was hard to tell as the wall and towel rack were shaking so hard I could literally hear them.  I come in the door at midnite from having a coffee with friends and it's Johnny Cash.  Now, don't get me wrong - I love Johnny Cash and I'm sure he's still singing his sweet music for God directly.  But it's 1am and I hear Johnny Cash.  First song was The Man Comes Around, followed by Hurt.  And that is the problem I believe, hurt.  The music was turned on at 1am, the fighting and cursing started at 12:30.  And everyone is hurt.  I must admit, I feel an urge to occassionally mute the TV, which I've turned up 2x, just to make sure I only hear yelling (with our previous neighbour it never ended there).  Which brings us around....

I can't find a house.  All over town in my price range are townhouses and duplexes.  My friends don't understand and laugh when I say that all I really want in a house is 4 walls that I own.  Why is that so unreasonable?  I want to listen to Johnny Cash when I want to (and I never want to listen to rap loud enough to shake the walls).  I want 4 walls, not 3 like I have now.

    Smoking

"So that you are not confused: It was the veteran, not the clergy, who gave you the choice of religion; It was the veteran, not the reporter, who gave you the freedom of the press; And last but not least it was the veteran, not the politician who gave you the right to vote."

    - Dennis Holmes, president of Windsor’s Riverside branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, expresses the importance of why he believes veterans should be given the choice to smoke in their clubs.

    Coming Round

Playing around on Wiki again - sometimes you find some really fascinating things out.  Life for instance, I looked up Strathroy.  That got me to Strathroy high school and the famous alumi.  Okay - this is odd, some are well known and some I literally went to high school with.

Obviously, the first on the list must be Sir Arthur Currie, as anyone in Strathroy can tell you.  It's a given.  And I had heard that Stephen Leacock was in the area - turns out he was a student teacher for 3months in 1888, yes the school is really that old.

Then there's Dr. Susie Carson - the first female doctor to graduate with first class honours in Ontario (1888- that must have been a good year). And James T. Shotwell - he was the author of the Labour provisons in the Treaty of Versailles and the inclusion of human rights in the UN Charter.  Both cool.

Then we have sports - and anyone who didn't play high school sports remembers just how important they were.  And I'm proud of the athletes since I can't do it - but do we really need to celebrate that a guy in my grade was the 43rd round draft pick for the Dodgers (Go Mark!)  Then we have hockey - Darryl Campbell, Brian Campbell and Andy McDonald - go guys!!!  And of course, Chris Daw - amazing athlete - gold medalist at 2006 Paralympic Games and Bronze Medalist at 1988 Games.

We have one artist - Kris Pearn, working for Sony Pictures Imageworks.  He is a great guy and a great artist but can somebody please update Wiki as to what Campbell MaKinley is doing...  He's great too.

Please let Wiki and the world know that our generation is more than sports.  Or post here who the best grad is from your high school.  Let your school spirit show!!!

ps. We also have Teddy Lane, bass player for Toronto altband, Tenth Planet.  Anybody know them?

    End ATM fees

Why should Canadians have to pay to use our own money???  Even Americans don't in many places and most of Europe doesn't pay ATM fees - at their own bank or someone else's.  It's our money - the banks are making billions  - Last year the Bank of Montreal posted profits of $2.6 billion, same with CIBC.  Bank of Nova Scotia (ScotiaBank) made $3.6billion, TD $4.6 billion and the big winner was Royal Bank with $4.8 BILLION.  In 2005, Canadians were charged $420 MILLION dollars to access our own money!

Most banks offer no fee accounts but require you to keep a certain amount in the bank - so bank fees hit people in the lowest income bracket hardest.  The NDP want this to stop.  Are we with them???

If I were a conspiracy theorist....

Now if I were a conspiracy theorist... I would wonder what's going on in Iraq right now.  Saddam's been dead 2 hrs (10pm EST on 12/29/06) and there's been no live reports.  In today's day and age - no live reports??  Please there are imbedded reporters there, there are troops on the ground.  It's 8am on a Saturday morning during Hajj.  There are more people in the area than usual.  Where are the reports?  What's really going on right now that they're NOT reporting?

    Diary of a Snow Shoveler

Sent to me by a friend out west (Thanks Ren!)  Wholely appropriate if you're anywhere near London/ Strathroy today...

    DIARY OF A SNOW SHOVELER

    December 8 - 6:00 PM

It started to snow. The first snow of the season and the wife and I

took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window watching the

huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It looked like a Grandma

Moses Print. So romantic we felt like newlyweds again. I love snow!

    December 9

We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every

inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Can there be a more

lovely place in the whole world? Moving here was the best idea I've

ever had! Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy

again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon

the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in

the driveway, so I got to shovel again. What a perfect life!

    December 12

The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a disappointment! My

neighbor tells me not to worry- we'll definitely have a white

Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful! Bob says we'll have

so much snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow

again. I don't think that's possible. Bob is such a nice man, I'm

    glad he's our neighbor.

    December 14

Snow, lovely snow! 8 inches last night. The temperature dropped to

-20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took my breath

away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks. This

is the life! The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried

everything again. I didn't realize I would have to do quite this

much shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this way. I

wish l wouldn't huff and puff so.

    December 15

20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer. Bought

snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra shovels. Stocked the

freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes

out. I think that's silly. We aren't in Alaska, after all.

    December 16

Ice storm this morning. Fell on my ass on the ice in the driveway

putting down salt. Hurt like hell. The wife laughed for an hour,

which I think was very cruel.

    December 17

Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere.

Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets on to

stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to

irritate her. Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't

admit it to her. God I hate it when she's right. I can't believe

I'm freezing to death in my own living room.

    December 20

Electricity's back on, but had another 14 inches of the damn stuff

last night. More shoveling! Took all day. The damn snowplow came by

twice. Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said

they're too busy playing hockey. I think they're lying. Called the

only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and

they're out. Might have another shipment in March. I think they're

lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and

bill me. I think he's lying.

    December 22

Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the

white shit fell today, and it's so cold, it probably won't melt

till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to

shovel and then I had to piss. By the time I got undressed, pissed

and dressed again. I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who

has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter, but he says

he's too busy. I think the asshole is lying.

    December 23

Only 2 inches of snow today. And it warmed up to 0. The wife wanted

me to decorate the front of the house this morning. What is she,

nuts?!! Why didn't she tell me to do that a month ago? She says she

did but I think she's lying.

    December 24

6 inches - Snow packed so hard by snowplow, l broke the shovel.

Thought I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch the son of a

bitch who drives that snow plow, I'll drag him through the snow by

his balls and beat him to death with my broken shovel. I know he

hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and

then he comes down the street at a 100 miles an hour and throws

snow all over where I've just been! Tonight the wife wanted me to

sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was too

busy watching for the damn snowplow.

    December 25

Merry f---ing Christmas! 20 more inches of the damn slop tonight -

Snowed in. The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. God, I hate

the snow! Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation

and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a

bad attitude. I think she's a fricking idiot. If I have to watch

"It's A Wonderful Life" one more time, I'm going to stuff her into

    the microwave.

    December 26

Still snowed in. Why the hell did I ever move here? It was all HER

idea. She's really getting on my nerves.

    December 27

Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze; plumber came after

14 hours of waiting for him, he only charged me $1,400 to replace

    all my pipes.

    December 28

Warmed up to above -20. Still snowed in. The BITCH is driving me

    crazy!!!

    December 29

10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave

in. That's the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think

    I am?

    December 30

Roof caved in. I beat up the snow plow driver, and now he is suing

me for a million dollars, not only the beating I gave him, but also

for trying to shove the broken snow shovel up his ass. The wife

went home to her mother. Nine more inches predicted.

    December 31

I set fire to what's left of the house. No more shoveling.

    January 8

Feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep giving

me. Why am I tied to the bed?

    Response

This is my response to my friend Hersh's blog...

I would like to add my comment AGAINST the vote by mail, or at least suggest improvements.  I voted in the last municipal election.  I am 100% certain of this fact (I even know who I voted for) in the same riding, at the same address.  This year - I wasn't on the voter's list.  My parents got a voting card for me, where I haven't lived in over 5yrs.  So I did what any normal working person under the age of 50 (excuse me, I mean no offense) and hit the town hall website.  There I could read how to register as a candidate, video instructions on how to vote by mail (perhaps more needed to read those) but I could not add myself to the voter's list, nor even find a link to find out how to.  So I tried to call town hall but they're closed for 2hrs when I get home at night.  I finally find ONE sign in the whole town (Thanks Doug and Marilyn's Bike Shop) and I am already 2days over the line to be added to the voter's list.  Great!  First election I've ever missed.

My suggestion - make your website more useful, not just at election time but all the time.  Perhaps, more people will know what's going on in the town and want to participate.  Second - investigate internet voting, it was used for the first time today in municipal elections.  We're a rural area but snail mail isn't the only way to mail anymore.

Congratulations and Thanks to all those who took part, both by running and voting.

    Lutheran? Or not?

Well, according to this page, I'm not 100% Lutheran.  Nobody tell my parents, or worse, Num and Bop!!  It's gotta be the year or two I was attending the Unitarian Universalist Church in Windsor.  Or perhaps the fact that I've studied religion to death and formed my own opinions (which are very close to the ones brought up on).  Sorry Dad - haven't gone Baptist....

Mostly still Lutheran since I laughed at all of this...  http://enigmaticperiodical.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!62681DC2865BE179!510.entry

    Life Update

Well, this was gonna be a MIL update only so let's start there....

DH's Mom is doing better still.  She's been approved for her leg, let's just hope all the funding gets approved too.  We're waiting for a bed at Parkwood (hopefully this wk) and then it's moving time.  You have no idea how much can accumulate for a crafty packrat in hospital for 4 months.  Wow - it seems a lot longer than 4 months.  Anyways, she's sent home several boxes already, preparing to leave Strathroy, but you can barely tell looking around her room.  She's been doing knitting for the nurses and crafts to decorate the room.  It's better looking than any other room on the 4th floor.  Once she moves to London, she'll start the procedure for getting a leg - fittings, physio, pain, all the fun stuff.  She's a much stronger woman than I am.

Work - my new job is good.  Management seems to think we're idiots but until we can prove them wrong, we're still noobs.  DH will be working in Thamesville starting mid-Nov.  Seems to be going better than we thought - the contract and union is moving with them.  Means no change to pay or benefits.  And the union's hoping it can negotiate a better contract with more ppl.  Things aren't too bad.

Sis is still in TO - working way too hard but mostly having fun doing it.  Dad bought a new truck yesterday - a red 2006 Dodge - that'll be the new work vehicle.  Mom's having eye surgery on Halloween (just cataracts).

Live continues and I'm stuck drinking cold Tim Horton's coffee - ever notice that you can't get to the bottom of an extra-large without it getting cold?  I miss the styrofom (sp?) earth-destroying Cup cups.....
    12 Oktober

    Another Closure

Yet another business is closing up shop in Strathroy and this one hits as close to home as the Cup.  Centroy Assembly closes the doors on Nov 21st.  So Ray's out of a job there.  However, to give them credit, the big boss man has another plant in Thamesville where he says they can work.  Yeah - it's only a 45min commute with rumours of lower pay....  Next chapter....
    03 Oktober

Breaking News out of Strathroy (like that ever happens)

OMG!!!  Why is it when things happen in town it's never good??

My Cup, the institution for those up late at nite that should be institutionized, is closing.  The news came out today (Monday) though it's not clear if they're closing Thursday or Friday (depends on when they run out of coffee and cups).  Where are we going to go???  Why are all the long standing businesses closing?

.  Please stop by and say bye to Wilson, Max, Cindy, Vicky, Cathy, Linda, Suzy and Brenda, as they now try to find thier way in the big world.  And to all Cupinites - leave your favourite memories here....  Whether it's flashing, dancing, euchre or farting....

I can't help but smile when I remember the nite after the bar when the fight moved into the Cup.  Everyone was trying to break it up but both sides wanted coffee too.  Humper stood up and yelled for everyone to stop fighting in his living room!  And I must grin when I remember Flipper dancing in his boxers in the rain in the bed of a pickup truck....

    Update on MIL

For those who have been following (or caring as the case may be), my mother-in-law is still in hospital.  The amputation went well but there's still some lingering infection.  We've kinda ruled out Thanksgiving and Halloween and are just now hoping she'll be home for Christmas.  At least she's in Strathroy so her friends can more easily visit.

On the somewhat good side, she got a day pass to go to church this past Sunday.  I say somewhat good, coz I had to go too.  She attends Bethel Baptist and it's about as far from Lutheran as you can get.  Good people, good church but COMPLETELY different service.  I made it through so next time the hubby's going with me.  We'll see how well that goes....

    Death of a Croc Hunter

Steve Irwin passed away today in Australia, doing what he does best - playing with dangerous animals.  However, most of us lost the bet as he was not eaten by a croc, but stung by a sting ray, a most unusual occurance.  Only 17 people in the world in the last 100 years have been killed by a sting ray.  Ask my mom - they're really cute and have faces like E.T.

The Crocodile Hunter served a great purpose - he made it cool to care about animals, even strange and dangerous ones.  How many times have we all watched him and asked if he was crazy or just stupid?  And I know we all did it when he took his 1month old son, in with him to the croc enclosure - he just explained that it was necessary for his children to be that comfortable with animals.  With his lifestyle - they'd better be.  In fact, he was filming a video with his daughter, Bindi, when his death occurred.

For more information on his life and career see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Irwin

RIP Steve Irwin, Australia's native son, environmentalist and Crocodile Hunter
