03 Juni PromisesSo what's the deal with Stephen Harper? I don't know anyone who voted for him but he still got in. Heck, my area went blue and I still don't know anyone who will admit to voting for him. It's like admitting you voted for Mike Harris in this province. My mom threatened to build a doghouse for my dad if he voted for Harris!
But still he's in on a minority government. So what does he do? Put 2 friends in position then say oops - our promise for accountability doesn't come into effect yet. However - WTF??? He's actually following through on his promises that has me scared. His promises weren't that great for low to middle income, nor for women, disabled, aboriginal or anyone who doesn't live in a large city with a transport system (bus pass rebate) or who's kids like Guiding or piano over soccer (rebates are only on sports).
Okay - so now handing out $1200 per family as he's promised and Middlesex County is cutting 600 planned day care spaces. Hope the little bit you get to keep after income tax will pay for a space that has demand through the roof.
And he's reopening the debate on same sex marriage! There's going to be a free vote in the fall whether to revisit the issue. But ppl who are already married will still be legally married - there just won't be any more marriages recognized under the law. I think we did this already. We decided that we thought it should be legal - that's why it is!!! We are not talking about a minor issue as to whether you can right on red - this is about people's lives! These are families that have legal ties - property, inheritance, income trusts, children - we can't allow the government to follow through on this election promise!!!! 19 Mai Right WingSo they've found a new way to get the right wing (usually middle to upper class) to donate to food banks. Tell them they're right.
I was watching ER Season Finale (amazing by the way) when I saw an ad for the food bank.
Kaylie doesn't know why she can't play with other kids.
Kaylie doesn't know that her mom can't get a good job because she never finished school.
Kaylie doesn't know that her dad never learned to serve her nutrious meals.
With your donation, she need never know.
Blame her parents for doing a bad job, then explain how you can keep her in denial about life. What about asking why her mom didn't finish school, what about incentives for continued education, what about the fact that even educated people are holding jobs that don't pay ends meet! It was obnoxious! Blame the parents for neglecting their child! Parents do the best they can, and until we live in a society where everyone is paid enough to live on (above poverty line) then food banks will exist. What about addressing the issues that feed into the need for food banks and other forms of assistance? What about making Canada into the country we want and will be proud of?! 04 Mai The BudgetOkay, so it's been 2 days since the new Conservative government under Stephen Harper brought out their first budget. And I haven't commented yet....
First and foremost - this was a budget designed to get re-elected. In case the minority gov't falls apart, they can say "Hey! We cut the GST!" This was a tax cut budget. But he raised taxes too!!! He raised the income tax rate for the lowest tax bracket (those that makes less than $35,595 according to the 2005 income tax guide, revised Schedule 5 for real tax geeks). He raised the tax from 15% to 15.5%. Okay - not a whole lot but isn't that the ppl who don't have a whole lot - you know - me, you and most of our friends. Why should we pay more for tax cuts to the wealthy and businesses??? They're the reason we don't have more - greed from the top down!!!
He said he'd make it better for us by giving us money to help with child care costs. I don't know about you but $3.29 / day doesn't sound like much towards child care costs. Now correct me if I'm wrong but I think it might just cost considerable more than that! But don't worry - with less subsided spots available, the regular ones will go up in cost and demand. So now you can't afford child care but the gov't says you make too much to qualify. Is Stephen Harper trying to get more women to get out of the work force? Is he that uncomfortable with the idea of women working? He must really hate those women who have the gall to get into politics - the man's realm!!
